City Hall isn’t breathing easily just yet. Now its lawyers have to face the 2011 Street Fighter of the Year.
Despite losing a breach-of-contract lawsuit potentially worth $10.5 million, Briercrest Development has appealed the November 2011 decision of Judge Joel Wohlfeil in El Cajon Superior Court.
Taking on the case for Briercrest is Kathryn Karcher, who has reputedly handled more than 150 appeals and writ proceedings.
Karcher’s San Diego-based law firm Karcher Harmes LLP will pursue the Briercrest appeal in the case of a failed senior-citizen’s condo project that morphed into a assisted-living home and skilled-nursing facility.
The developer says it’s invested more than $4 million in the project while trying to secure private financing. When it couldn’t get a private loan, it sued the city for not financing the project near Sharp Grossmont Hospital.
According to her website, Karcher received the 2011 Street Fighter of the Year award from the Consumer Attorneys of California for excellence in representing plaintiffs on appeal.
“Karcher has been included in San Diego Super Lawyers for 2007 through 2012, as one of the Super Lawyers Top 25 Women Lawyers in San Diego County for 2008 and 2010 through 2012, and for Washington Super Lawyers for 2012,” her biography says.
“Karcher has also been included in The Best Lawyers in America for 2006 through 2012, and Karcher Harmes LLP was included in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Law Firms in Appellate Practice for 2011 through 2012.”
According to the website Avvo, Karcher was part of a legal team working for Bayer Corp. , the defendant in another 4th District court case.
The Court of Appeal in October 2011 affirmed the judgment for the defendants. “Class action plaintiffs alleged that a branded drug manufacturer and generic drug manufacturers violated antitrust laws by settling patent litigation challenging the branded drug manufacturer’s patent on the active ingredient in the antibiotic Cipro,” said a summary of the case that Karcher won.
The Avvo site rates Karcher “superb,” with a 9.2 rating and “No professional misconduct found.”
In the Briercrest case, an appeal could take a year and a half, according to a court spokesman.
“The next item due is the reporters transcript due on [March 20], followed by the clerks transcript and the briefs by attorneys on both sides of the case,” said Kevin Lane, assistant clerk administrator for the San Diego section of the Fourth Appellate District, called Division One.
“The latest numbers I’ve seen indicate that it takes about 481 days for a civil case to work through the appellate court,” Lane said Friday via email.
The 2-year-old case was fought by city attorneys Glenn Sabine and Gregory Lusitana, and four days before the appeal was filed the city won a court order for $147,233 in attorney fees.
Briercrest has deposited of $1,625 in making the appeal, which the city of La Mesa was notified about in mid-December.
On Wedensday, Mayor Art Madrid responded to a Patch query about the Briercrest victory in Superior Court, summarized in a story Tuesday.
“Thanks for showcasing the work our city attorneys do,” Madrid said via email. “On your request, I can’t comment because this matter is in the appeal process.”
Sometimes…we get bored. And, you know, fun-loving developers happen to be in our office. And, well…things happen.
When Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono stopped by to demo Street Fighter X Tekken last week, we handed him a piece of paper with lines from the Street Fighter movie on it, crossed our fingers, turned a camera on, and hoped for the best. You can see the result above.
Then let us know in the comments if this kind of thing should ever happen again.
Capcom and Namco went over and beyond to bring gamers a classic clash of epic proportions. Really. Namco has announced that they will add Pac-Man to the line-up of fighters and Capcom will be including Mega Man from the Mega Man 1 box art to the Street Fighter X Tekken roster.
That’s right, Mega Man won’t be the pudgy little guy you’ve grown to know and love over the years in the tight blue spandex, the one Capcom is including is the scary looking guy from the box art of the very first Mega Man, the very same guy you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley during the punk-gang era of 1980s. You can see just how both Pac-Man and the futuristic 1980s Mega Man look in the new gameplay promotional trailer below.
Wow, Mega Man looks disturbing. The underwear he’s wearing over his vein-tight spandex is equally disturbing. That huge perverto stomach doesn’t help his case either.
Yeah, that Mega Man is definitely someone you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley.
Surprisingly enough Pac-Man looked pretty cool in the trailer and it will be interesting see how he handles in the game. Additional PS3 and PSV exclusive characters include Cole from Sony and Sucker Punch’s inFamous as well as Kuro and Toro.
You can look for Street Fighter X Tekken to land on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this spring. For more info on the game feel free to visit the Official Website.
Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono is currently hard at work on Street Fighter X Tekken, but he’s also thinking up some new ideas for future fighting games. While SFxT allows players to equip their fighters with stat-altering gems, he suggests his “ultimate goal” is to let players customize their fighters more extensively, or even create their own.
“For future titles I want to keep having this concept of, my character is different than your character,” Ono told Eurogamer. “In fighting games, the only difference between me and you is how good I am. But what I want to do with fighting games from now on is add in that element of customization, where I can have a Ryu that’s different than your Ryu, so we can compete on a different level than just our execution.
“But really the ultimate goal would be to have the players themselves create their own characters to some degree,” he said. “We call it user created content, or user created design.” He says that would take it a step beyond tweaks to pre-made characters, and player-created characters could spread throughout the community. He suggests this concept wouldn’t necessarily have to wait for the next generation, and could be done on current hardware.
Once the next generation does hit, though, Ono is already thinking of ways to take advantage of the increased horsepower. “Fighting games are great to be spectated. The players enjoy it, but people watching can also enjoy them. With the next generation of hardware we can make things better for the spectator in that sense. So maybe the guy’s clothes could get ripped off during the fight. Chun-Li would be like, ‘Oh no!’ There are a lot of things we could do with the graphics to make it look better. But in terms of the basics, we already have a lot of the power we need.”
Street Fighter x Tekken’s gem system allows players to customize their characters based on predetermined factors. However, critics fear they will diminish the balance that makes fighting games such a hit on the tourney circuit. A greater degree of customization would probably be met with some resistance, but at least Capcom’s top talent is thinking of ways to innovate.
You have to feel for Xbox 360 owners with regard to some of the recent fighting game releases. After missing out on an exclusive character for Mortal Kombat while PS3 users received Kratos, we can tell you that Capcom are also shunning Microsoft’s console after confirming that the PS3 will only be receiving exclusive characters for the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken game.
But like Mortal Kombat, that doesn’t mean to say that it wasn’t in the minds of developers Capcom. We can tell you that Capcom had been planning to give Xbox 360 users some exclusive characters for Street Fighter X Tekken as well, since PS3 owners will be getting Toro, Kuro and Cole aside from the growing list of characters already confirmed for the game.
Yoshinori Ono has revealed that he was in discussions with Microsoft as to who to put in the game as exclusive characters. Possible names appearing in the game include Marcus Fenix from Gears of War and even Master Chief himself from the Halo series. Unfortunately, something didn’t fit and due to ‘difficulty’ it never happened.
Although it would have been great to see such heroes in a crossover fighting game, some hardcore Street Fighter fans may have questioned the decision anyway since both characters come from completely different background. Having said that, the same can be said for Cole from inFAMOUS who is a surprise addition to the Street Fighter and Tekken universe as well.
According to further comments from Ono though, it looks like the Xbox 360 will not be getting any exclusive characters at all now as he said that ‘it’s just too bad, basically’. What are your thoughts on this? Are you a bit disappointed that we won’t be seeing the likes of Marcus Fenix and Master Chief in the game, or is the idea of both characters appearing in the game borderline ridiculous? Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden would have been a great fit though, but we guess that gamers can just play Dead or Alive if they want to see him in a fighting game.
The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Street Fighter X Tekken already have inFamous‘ Cole and Sony characters Kuro and Toro, and now they’re about to get two new strange exclusive characters: Pac-Man and Mega-Man.
Before all of you Mega-Man fans get too excited, there’s a catch: the Street Fighter X Tekken version of the character is far from what fans of the franchise will recognize. Instead, Capcom chose to with a goofy variation based on the hilariously bad Mega Man 1 box art.
If that isn’t strange enough for you, Namco’s representative in the fighting game crossover, Pac-Man, will be engaging in battles while riding on Mokujin from the Tekken series.
“In the spirit of crossover fun, the dev team wanted both Capcom and Namco’s mascots to join the fray in a slightly silly, goofy way,” Capcom said in a post on Capcom-Unity. “Pac-Man riding Mokujin is about as weird as it can get, so the best equivalent for Mega Man would have to be the so-bad-it’s-good-but-still-kinda-bad box art from Mega Man 1 in the US.”
You can check out the latest Street Fighter X Tekken trailer to see all of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita-exclusive characters, including Mega-Man and Pac-Man, directly below.
Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has unfortunately confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken won’t have its own exclusive character.
While the PS3 and Vita versions will have characters unique to those platforms, Ono says Xbox gamers will have to make do with the (admittedly already awesome) universal roster.
“We do have the exclusive characters for the Sony platform. We have Cole, the two Sony cats, Kuro and Toro. But basically for the Xbox 360, we were in discussions with them (Microsoft) for which character to put in as an exclusive, but we weren’t able to decide on a character because of differences in timing and things like that,” said Ono.
“So unfortunately for Street Fighter X Tekken, only the PlayStation family will be getting the exclusive characters, but it’s something we wish could have happened. It’s just too bad, basically,” he added.
It’s a shame too, because Ono had some big names up his sleeve: “In terms of characters we wish we could have put in the game, Master Chief or Marcus Fenix from Gears of War would have been really cool.”
Has one genre ever made you change your opinion of another? Commenter File2ish explains how Namco’s Tales of Symphonia made him a fighting game fan in today’s Speak Up on Kotaku.
What game genre did you not like when you first played it, but you now like (after an extended period of time of not playing it)? For me it was fighting games. Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, and the like.
I think what got me into the genre was the battle system in the “Tales of” series, specifically Tales of Symphonia. I played the crap out of it, beat it at -least- 13 times over the past 9 or 10 years. Everything about the game was great in my opinion (well aside from some of the voice acting), and the battle system is one of the things that kept bringing me back to the game.
Now the first fighting game I actually got into was Soul Calibur 2, which I didn’t like at first because my older brother would always beat my arse with Nightmare (I used Kilik and Cassandra at the time). I hated losing to him so much that I just hated the genre. Fast forward to after my 3rd or 4th Tales of Symphonia play through, I popped Soul Calibur 2 in for kicks and really got into SC2. In fact, I almost surpassed my brother at the game, we were pretty much equally matched. I still remember when our friend’s older brother learned we played the game and challenged us (on Xbox, we have the GameCube one so he had the advantage). He considered himself pretty great at the game with Mitsirugi, since he was on par with his friend. My brother stomped his arse twice using Nightmare, and he also beat the friend without losing. I didn’t even get to fight him since he got so mad that they lost (in addition to my brother and friend saying I was just as good as my brother, but with Cassandra).
After I was done with SC2 I didn’t play fighting games for years, until I got a PSP. Dissidia Final Fantasy (as well as Duodecim now) and Soul Calibur Broken Destiny are probably my 2 most played PSP games. While Dissidia isn’t a traditional fighter, I played the damn game nonstop. I perfected Jecht and got great with Tidus, Terra, Shantotto, and Cloud. As for SC I still main Cassandra (with a side of Cervantes).
Now I’m really into Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, which I can’t stop playing… Getting up there with Ibuki and Cammy, can’t seem to win online with Chun Li, Juri, and Sakura anymore.
Now I really want SoulCalibur V and Street Fighter X Tekken … But I won’t get them just yet… Mass Effect 3 comes first =p Hopefully the SCV community doesn’t die quickly.
At some point after the release of Street Fighter X Tekken this March, Capcom says it will release a post-launch “tournament support” patch.
Capcom didn’t provide any specifics on what sort of features will come with the tournament support patch, but the developer did say that the patch’s main goal is to alleviate concerns from hardcore fighting game fans over the controversial gem system.
While the gem system may be a welcome addition to the casual fighting game fan, tournament-level players have been slamming it since the day it was announced, with many calling for an option to disable the gem system.
Capcom isn’t saying whether or not the patch will allow players to disable the gem system entirely for tournament play, but Yoshinori Ono told Eurogamer that Capcom was working on a patch to address at least some of the concerns of their dedicated fanbase.
“We know a lot of players are worried that with the gem system tournaments will be harder to run,” Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono told Eurogamer.
“We know they take a lot of time. A lot of players were saying, ‘I have to do button checks. Do I have to do a gem check now before a match?’ With regards to that we plan to release a free post-launch tournament support mode. Hopefully it will alleviate a lot of the concerns the community has.”
One of several fears fighting game fans had of Street Fighter X Tekken‘s gem system was that Capcom would eventually release gem DLC down the line, which would have the potential for giving players who purchase the DLC an unfair advantage over those without it. Ono says not to worry, however.
“In terms of DLC gems, we don’t have any set plans on selling gems like this or like that,” Ono said. “We’re waiting to see what the user reaction is first, because we think a lot of users still don’t understand the gem system completely.”
We thought it would be a good idea to let Street Fighter X Tekken fans in on some of the latest news on the characters you may expect to see in the upcoming crossover fighting game.
A report on ShackNews writes about there not being any Xbox-exclusive characters yet the PlayStation title will have some and the PS Vita game could contain Mega Man and Pac-Man. It looks like Cole from Infamous, Toro and Kuro from Japanese exclusive Mainichi Issho will be involved on the PlayStation, although Producer Yoshinori Ono has said that it is up to Microsoft whether they want to add more content to their game. Therefore, at the moment it seems as if Sony will be the ones with the additional content on their titles.
When it comes to what characters they would like to see Yoshinori Ono said Gears of War’s Marcus Fenix and Master Chief were a couple that they wanted but it was too hard in terms of maintaining the flexibility of the character. MTV Geek talks about the announcement update from Capcom on the characters that were generally expected with six familiar faces, three from either side. On the Namco Bandai team Xiaoyu, Law and Paul and on the side of Capcom the villains are Juri, Vega and Balrog will be joining the line-up.
New images of Raven have been seen recently and he will be a cool character although there is intrigue as to whether this will coincide with 2D aspect of move sets that relied on getting around the challenger in Tekken 5 and its sequel. Having Marshall Law back will be welcomed especially with his moves along with Guile and Paul even though the similarities with Ken and Paul will be interesting.
Which characters would you like to see in Street Fighter X Tekken? Are they basically, what you were expecting?
